Koyasan is home to an active monastic center founded twelve centuries ago by the priest kukai (later knows as Kobo Daishi)for the study and practice of Esoteric Buddhism. It is the headquarters of the Koyasan sect of Shingon Buddhism, a sect with a wide following throughout Japan.
I saw this ceremony fully online a while back. I think it was over an hour long. I think participants write either what they want or don't want (not sure) on the little sticks of wood that later will be used to create the great fire of transmutation. All I could find now was this 10 minute excerpt. Just the sound of the drums is mesmerizing, think why that is...
